Child A has been on this rapid downward spiral for the last, oh, 8 months. But seriously, it's gotten pretty bad over the past few weeks. He's extremely disruptive and disrespectful and has begun to act violently toward other students. On Thursday, the principal called me into his office to discuss Child A's recent behavior. He initially suggested changing classes, but I know that it wouldn't help the situation. I tried to explain to the principal that Child A's troubles are related to himself. It doesn't matter who he's interacting with; he'll project his anger onto anyone.
The solution was to put a parent volunteer in my classroom to sit with Child A and try to calm him down or take him out of the room. This parent has come to my room for the past few days and it's been an interesting experience. She takes him out when he's making it impossible to teach - but isn't that exactly what he wants? It's nice to have her there to quiet him and remove him when need be, but I don't think we're solving his problem.
So, progress for me? Yes. Progress for the administration taking action? Definitely. Progress for Child A? We'll see.
